What Custom Actually Means

Most suits that call themselves custom or even made to measure, begin the same way every other suit does, from a factory pattern, resized to sit a little closer than before. It is a nudge in the right direction, not a true fit.

At AlbertGerald, we begin at the pattern, not the fabric. We draft it from your own measurements, not a factory block. If one shoulder sits lower than the other, we correct it in the pattern. If your posture pulls a jacket’s balance forward or back, we adjust for it in the pattern. If a fuller midsection would pull an X across the front buttons, we build in the room for it in the pattern, before a single piece of cloth is cut. The shoulders are set first, and set right, because everything else follows from them. This is not something a factory pattern can be resized into. It has to be drafted around you from the start.

What Holds Our Jacket's Shape

Our Custom suits are all built the same way beneath the cloth. A jacket is not one layer. it is several, and the one you never see is the one holding everything else in place. Ours is horsehair canvas, hand-sewn into the chest, never glued.

Most jackets today are fused, a layer of interlining pressed onto the cloth with heat and adhesive. It looks fine on the hanger. It also never moves the way you do, and over years the bond breaks down and the chest goes flat. Horsehair canvas is different. It floats free between the cloth and the lining, so the jacket follows your body instead of fighting it. Wear it, sit in it, reach for something, and the canvas gives, then returns.

Shaping it is slow work, done by hand before the jacket is ever assembled. Heat, steam, and hand pressure build the curve of the chest over hours, not seconds, worked, rested, and worked again until the canvas holds that curve on its own. This is why the chest keeps its shape for years, long after a fused jacket has gone flat.

Because nothing is bonded, it can also be opened, let out, and reshaped as you change, serviced the way a good pair of boots gets resoled, not thrown away and replaced.

Beyond Custom, True Bespoke

At our Jersey City studio, we also build true bespoke suits for the men who want to go further than custom suits. A bespoke suit isn’t drafted once and cut, it’s built on you, fitting by fitting, the fabric shaped against your body and refined at every stage until it settles exactly right. Multiple fittings, hand-adjusted patterns, nothing rushed. Bespoke suiting begins at $4,500, the same forty years of mastery, taken as far as it can go.

FAQ

How is made to measure different from made-to-order?

Made to order starts from an existing block and adjusts it closer to your size. Our Custom Made Suits start from nothing. Your pattern is drafted from your own measurements, at our Jersey City studio, before any fabric is chosen and cut based on your body’s made pattern.

How long does a custom suit take?

Most custom suits are ready in four to six weeks. Bespoke, built entirely in-house from pattern to final stitch, takes six to eight. Either way, nothing leaves until it fits the way it should.

How many fittings will I need?

Usually two, an initial measure and a fitting once the garment is underway, sometimes a third if minor adjustments call for it. We would rather ask you back than send you home in something that isn’t to our standards.

I don't know much about fabric or style. Can you help me choose?

That’s most of the first appointment. We’ll walk you through Loro Piana, Reda, Zegna, and Drago, ask what the suit is for, and guide you toward what actually suits your build and the occasion, not just what’s popular. We always keep timeless in mind.

What does a custom suit cost?

Custom suits start around $1,300, depending on cloth. True bespoke, hand-built in-house, begins at $4,500. Book a fitting and we’ll walk you through exact pricing based on what you have in mind. We also offer custom tailored suits starting at $900.

Do I need to come to Jersey City, or do you work with clients further out?

Jersey City is where the pattern work happens, but we serve clients across New Jersey, and many travel in for a single fitting day. We have 3 locations; Somerset NJ, Millburn NJ, and Jersey City NJ. If distance is a concern, mention it when you book and we’ll work out a schedule that fits. We offer in-home fittings for an additional fee.
